Bowling Event To Raise Awareness of Bullying

Meghan Marks

The “Strike Against Bullying” fundraiser organized by Miss Delray Beach Teen USA will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 21, 2012, at Jupiter Lanes. A donation of $20 is requested.

Participating bowlers will get two hours on the lanes with shoe rental.

The benefiting charity is the Kidsafe Foundation, whose mission is to teach safety skills to children and lower the rate of child abuse and bullying.

“I wanted to raise awareness about bullying,” said Meghan Marks, 16, who is organizing the event with her mother. “I was personally bullied in middle school and high school and wish I was given the advice and skills that the Kidsafe Foundation has developed.

“The proceeds from this fundraiser will be donated to the Kidsafe Foundation,” the Jupiter High School student continued. “I love that they speak in schools and educate students, parents, teachers, etc., regarding bullying. It’s hard enough growing up, but the added stress of being bullied makes life so miserable for many kids. I just want to make a difference and help out.

Dallas Cowboys Safety Abram Elam will host his fifth-annual T.E.A.M. (Together Everyone Achieves More) Elam Charity Weekend featuring the “NBA vs. NFL Bowl-A-Thon,” co-hosted by Cleveland Cavaliers player and Riviera Beach native Alonzo Gee, from 7 to 10 p.m. June 8 at Jupiter Lanes, 350 Maplewood Dr. in Jupiter.

The event raises funds for child-mentoring to promote pride, unity, peace and hope in the local community. This year’s event once again gives locals the opportunity to bowl with the NBA and NFL elite for a great cause. Cost is $25 to $35 for two hours of bowling, rental shoes and appetizers with the players. For $50 to $60, participants can purchase a VIP ticket, which includes a meet-and-greet dinner with the NBA and NFL.

Founded 2008, T.E.A.M. Elam Foundation is the brainchild of Riviera Beach resident Abram Elam. Elam’s organization was formed specifically to combat violence and negative influences impacting today’s youths.

“I have lost three siblings to murder in the streets of Riviera Beach,” he said. “I believe by showing that I can persevere through adversity and tragedy, maybe I am able to spark a sense of hope in the lives of the children of this community to never give up on their dreams.”

T.E.A.M. Elam introduces young people to positive influences that leave lasting impressions on their lives. NBA & NFL team players come together to mentor local youth. The goal of the organization is to equip young people with the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to succeed in life. This year, an additional goal of T.E.A.M. Elam is to teach youths to be respectful and to do their part to protect the environment.
