Previewing the Valero Texas Open

The first major of the PGA tour season is a week away. While some of the top golfers will take this week off to rest and prepare for their trip to Augusta, others, like Palm Beach Gardens resident Rory Mcllroy, will head to San Antonio to compete in this weekend’s Valero Texas Open. Here is a look at the local golfers who will be competing in their final tune up before the Masters.

Rory Mcllroy- This tournament was not originally on the schedule for Mcllroy. In fact the world’s number two golfer was supposed to head to Hati on a missions trip this week. However, after an up and down start to his 2013 season and a suggestion by his caddie over lunch last Friday, Mcllroy will make his debut at the TPC San Diego looking to get another round of competitive golf in before the Masters.

Frenchmans Reserve (4)-1Charl Schwartzel (Old Palm)- Mcllroy’s Palm Beach Gardens neighbor will also be making his debut at this event. Schwartzel has finished no worse than 16th in his has 11 events worldwide and tied for fourth last week in Malaysia on the European Tour. The 2011 Masters champion hopes to continue his consistent play as he prepares for his trip to Augusta.

Freddie Jacobson- The Hobe Sound resident hasn’t played since Doral three weeks ago. Even though he has only played in six PGA tour events this year, his consistent play has landed him a spot in the Masters field. Since missing the cut in the Waste Management Phoenix Open, Jacobson has finished in the top 25 in his next five events. This will be his fourth time playing the Valero Texas Open and in his three previous trips to San Antonio he finished 2nd, 5th, and 18th.
