‘The Maltese Falcon’ Lands at Burt Reynolds Institute

Improv Showcase.2 small

Master actors will take the stage June 9 at the Burt Reynolds Institute.

Master actors from the Burt Reynolds Institute for Film & Theatre will reenact The Maltese Falcon in much the same way it was presented during the golden age of radio. The Airplayz

Using specially designed props and some traditional and not-so-traditional devices for sound effects, the performers will bring to life those days when radio was the dominant form of entertainment. And, to add to the fun, the audience will become part of the show. The program begins at 7:30 p.m. June 9.

The Maltese Falcon, written in 1930, by Dashiell Hammett, is considered by many critics to be one of the finest radio dramas ever presented. The popularity of Hammett’s main character, Sam Spade, endures today.

The evening will be hosted and directed by award-winning actor Gordon McConnell, an instructor at BRIFT. McConnell’s career has taken him from Los Angeles to London to Amersterdam to New York City and, eventually, to South Florida, where his performances have earned him the prestigious Carbonell Award.

Tickets are $15. For information, call (561) 385-1584.

Dallas Cowboys Safety Abram Elam will host his fifth-annual T.E.A.M. (Together Everyone Achieves More) Elam Charity Weekend featuring the “NBA vs. NFL Bowl-A-Thon,” co-hosted by Cleveland Cavaliers player and Riviera Beach native Alonzo Gee, from 7 to 10 p.m. June 8 at Jupiter Lanes, 350 Maplewood Dr. in Jupiter.

The event raises funds for child-mentoring to promote pride, unity, peace and hope in the local community. This year’s event once again gives locals the opportunity to bowl with the NBA and NFL elite for a great cause. Cost is $25 to $35 for two hours of bowling, rental shoes and appetizers with the players. For $50 to $60, participants can purchase a VIP ticket, which includes a meet-and-greet dinner with the NBA and NFL.

Founded 2008, T.E.A.M. Elam Foundation is the brainchild of Riviera Beach resident Abram Elam. Elam’s organization was formed specifically to combat violence and negative influences impacting today’s youths.

“I have lost three siblings to murder in the streets of Riviera Beach,” he said. “I believe by showing that I can persevere through adversity and tragedy, maybe I am able to spark a sense of hope in the lives of the children of this community to never give up on their dreams.”

T.E.A.M. Elam introduces young people to positive influences that leave lasting impressions on their lives. NBA & NFL team players come together to mentor local youth. The goal of the organization is to equip young people with the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to succeed in life. This year, an additional goal of T.E.A.M. Elam is to teach youths to be respectful and to do their part to protect the environment.
