The WIZ is a fantastic American musical that is a retelling of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz through the perspective of the African American culture. After first opening in 1975 it received seven Tony Awards including the prestigious best musical award. Throughout the years it has had many revivals in places like New York, London, and now South Florida in the tropical town of Jupiter.

The Maltz Jupiter Theatre wanted a diverse group of talent for this production so they held a non-traditional audition. Andrew Kato, the Maltz Theatre’s artistic director stated that “sometimes people are threatened to come to a theater because they feel it’s too formal, so the idea came to go to a non-traditional situation to see if we could bring out some people who would not otherwise come into a formal setting of a theater.” And this brought out a diverse pool of young talent throughout South Florida ranging in ages from 12 to 21 for them to choose from. The Maltz is set to run the production between January 13^th and February 1^st.
